Benefits

HS-STEM Scholars supported by this receive the following benefits:

  • Undergraduate students receive:
    • a stipend of AT LEAST $1,000 per month for up to two years
    • full tuition support for one year and 50% tuition support for a second year
    • travel to one Homeland Security-related workshop/academic conference
    • Assistance in placement in a Homeland Security-related Summer Internship
    • Assistance in meeting the post-graduation placement requirement
  • Graduate students receive:
    • a stipend of AT LEAST $2,000 per month for up to four years (depending on degree program)
    • full tuition support
    • travel to one Homeland Security-related workshop/academic conference
    • Assistance in placement in a Homeland Security-related Summer Internship
    • Assistance in meeting the post-graduation placement requirement

Requirements

All HS-STEM Scholars must meet or agree to meet the following requirements:

  • Must be seeking a BS, MS, or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or Information Technology at Florida International University
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale
  • Must participate in at least one summer internship; CAESCIR will help facilitate such internships
  • Must engage in one year of professional employment within the homeland security enterprise starting within one year after graduation. Such employment may include US Department of Homeland Security Centers of Excellence, federal research facilities, foreign partners, foreign research institutions, and industry; CAESCIR will help facilitate such placements. This requirement will be waived for any undergraduate student who attends graduate school in an HS-STEM related field immediately after receiving their bachelor’s degree. This requirement will be waived for any master’s degree student who has been accepted to a Ph.D. program. The requirement will also be waived for anyone entering active duty in the United States armed forces, United States Coast Guard, or U.S. Public Health Service.
  • Must agree to share personal information with their academic institutions that will allow their institution to track their progress toward a career in HS-STEM research and development: specifically, their graduation with a bachelor’s degree and their enrollment in, and graduation from, an HS-STEM related graduate degree, and their initial employment.
