Alexis Gonzalez
Ph.D. Student
Alexis received his B.S of Computer Science from FIU summer of 2020, and has started his PhD studies in the Fall of 2020. During his undergraduate studies Alexis was involved with various organizations, including SparkDev and S.T.A.R.S, for which he received the Best Undergraduate Student in Service Award in November of 2019. His research has been focused on the development of Caching Simulation under the mentorship of Dr. Raju Rangaswami and Dr. Jason Liu, the CAESCIR PI. Alexis was supported by CAESCIR starting in Fall of 2020.
Ervin Moore
Ph.D. Student
Ervin Moore is a Ph.D. student and DHS CAESCIR Fellow at the Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences at FIU. He is a member of the Sustainability, Optimization, and Learning for InterDependent networks laboratory (solid lab) working with Dr. Amini and Dr. Rezapour. Prior to that, he graduated with a MSc in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning from Colorado State University-Global, following his BA in Communication Technology from University of Texas at Arlington. Ervin participated in AI related hackathons and has won multiple. His applied research involved using machine learning and large language models to improve user experiences. His current research interests are artificial intelligence, machine learning and their application in critical infrastructure security and resilience.
Carolina Martinez
4+1 in CS Student
Carolina Martinez is an undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. After graduating with her Bachelors, she plans to pursue a Masters in Computer Science. Having worked at FIU since her first semester working in jobs ranging from IT support to Front End Development, she is also involved with Upsilon Pi Epsilon and Women in Computer Science (WICS), often volunteering her time with Girls Who Code. She will begin her fellowship starting in Spring 2022 under the supervision of Dr. Jason Liu. Some of her interests include Artificial Intelligence, Machine learning, and Software Development.
Samuel Muvdi
4+1 in CS Student
Samuel Muvdi earned his associates degree in computer science from Miami Dade College. He then started attending FIU in January 2021 where he is pursuing a bachelors of science in computer science. His interests include cloud computing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, software development, website development, and database administration; he loves to learn new things related to his career path and to create new things.

Mireya Jurado
Ph.D. Graduate
Mireya was a Computer Science PhD candidate under Dr. Geoffrey Smith and Dr. Mark Finlayson, a CAESCIR Co-PI. Her research focus is quantifying information leakage. She has published in the Cloud Computing Security Workshop and she was a FIU School of Computing and Information Sciences Director’s Fellow from 2016-2019. Mireya was an intern at MIT Lincoln Laboratory where she helped to advance state-of-the-art cryptography and designed components of a new security architecture. Before joining FIU, Mireya graduated summa cum laude from the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Anthropology. She earned her Ph.D. in Computer Science in the Summer of 2022 and was selected as a Fellow in the Presidential Management Fellowship (PMF) Program, a two-year, full-time, paid fellowship that provides a pathway for federal employment. Under this fellowship, she accepted a position as a Program Analyst with Cost Assessment and Program Evaluation (CAPE), where she will be evaluating cyber-security programs for the Department of Defense.
Samira Zad
Ph.D. Graduate
Samira began her PhD studies in the Fall of 2017 and started as a CAESCIR Fellow in the Fall 2018 semester. She received an MS in CS from Northeastern Illinois University in August 2016 and a BS in Applied Mathematics from Kashan University in 2005. Her Major Professor was Dr. Mark Finlayson, a CAESCIR Co-PI. She earned her PhD in Computer Science in Spring 2022 and is now a faculty member at Florida Atlantic University.
Pedro Espina
Ph.D. Student
Pedro PhD student who joined our program in Fall 2018. He received his MS in in Mathematics in December, 2013, and BS degrees in both Mathematics and Physics in May, 2011, all from Florida International University. He has since worked as a high school physics teacher at a local charter school. In addition to being named as a CAESCIR Fellow, Pedro has received a McKnight Fellowship in 2018-2019; he’ll be participating in CAESCIR activities, but supported by the McKnight Fellowship in the first year of his doctoral studies and has selected Dr. Jason Liu, the CAESCIR PI, as his major professor starting in Fall 2018.
Luiz Manella Pereira
Ph.D. Student
Luiz Manella Pereira is a Ph.D. student and former DHS CAESCIR Fellow at the School of Computing and Information Sciences at FIU. He is a member of the Sustainability, Optimization, and Learning for InterDependent networks laboratory (solid lab) working with Dr. Amini. Prior to that, he was an Undergraduate DHS CAESCIR Fellow with solid lab. He graduated as a Worlds Ahead Scholar in the Fall of 2019 with a BBA in Finance, followed by a BS in Applied Mathematics Fall 2020. He is very passionate about tackling real-world problems from a mathematical point of view. His current research interests are the theory of artificial intelligence, machine learning and their application in network resilience and autonomous systems. He is now supported by a US Deartment of Education funded GAANN Fellowship.
Cesar Rojas
Ph.D. Student
Cesar is a native Miamian that graduated from Miami Coral Park Senior High, Miami-Dade College, and Florida International University, earning his diploma, Associate of Arts in Computer Information Systems, and Bachelor of Science in Information Technology respectively. Additionally, Cesar graduated from FIU Summa Cum Laude through the Honors College in the Spring of 2012 and was an active member of several student organizations; GEP, UPE, ACM, and others. After graduation, Cesar went and completed two software engineering internships at Costa Farms and Ultimate Software which would eventually lead to an almost 4 year application development consulting career at Microsoft. Cesar ended his Microsoft career in 2016 to pursue a graduate degree and began a Computer Science master's degree at the City University of New York at City College. After 1 year attending CUNY City College, Cesar returned to Miami where he would finish his master's program in the Fall of 2019 and begin his PhD under the supervision of Dr. Leonardo Bobadilla, researching applications of Secure Multiparty Computation in the field of Robotics. He is now supported by a GEM Fellowship as he continues to pursue his Ph.D.
Caitlin Brown
M.S. Graduate
Caitlin graduated with her B.S. in Computer Science from FIU in the fall of 2020. During her undergraduate and graduate studies, she worked with React in web development under the supervision of Dr. Peter Clarke. She continues her graduate studies while working in research involving ransomware defense and backup services under the guidance of Dr. Amin Kharraz. She graduated with her M.S. in Cybersecurity with CAESCIR support in the spring of 2022 under the supervision of Dr. Amin Kharraz.
Daniel Perez
M.S. Student
Daniel began his MS in Computer Science studies in Fall 2018 after graduating with his BS in CS (Magna Cum Laude) in Spring 2018. He enjoys participating in MLH events such as Mango Hacks and Shell Hacks and previously worked as a Learning Assistant for Software Engineering courses. He worked with Dr. Monique Ross, a CAESCIR Co-PI, until he earned his MS in CS degree in Fall 2019.
Enrique Rodicio
M.S. Graduate
Enrique Rodicio began his studies at FIU in the Fall 2018 semester, graduated with a BS in Computer Science in December 2020, and graduated with an MS in Computer Science under CAESCIR support. During his senior project, he worked under the guidance of Dr. Deng Pan who was the product owner of GraderFinder, his team’s selected project. Enrique served as team lead for this project, which consisted of a Ruby on Rails web application to facilitate the process of teachers finding graders. At the end of the term, Dr. Pan invited Enrique to join the CAESCIR program to work on a research project under his and Dr. Jason Liu’s supervision. He now works as a Data Engineer at Watsco Industries.
Christopher Clement
B.S. in CS Student
Christopher Clement has been volunteering in the Discovery Laboratory at the FIU School of Computing and Information Sciences (SCIS) as a Robotics Teaching Assistant since the Fall of 2017. Dr. Leonardo Bobadilla, a CAESCIR Co-PI, has identified him as a good fit for CAESCIR Fellow via his work in that Laboratory. Christopher was supported by CAESCIR starting in the Fall 2018 semester, working with Dr. Bobadilla on robotic surveillance until his graduation in Fall of 2019.
Nicholas Gomez
B.S. in CS Graduate
Nicholas was an undergrad student who earned a BS in Computer Science. After graduating high school with his AA under his belt, he came to FIU with an interest in cybersecurity and an eagerness to do more and learn more. He began his fellowship with CAESCIR in Spring 2020 under the supervision of Dr. Jason Liu. He now works for Kaseya.

Dalton Grovatt
B.S. in IT Student
Dalton Grovatt transferred from a New Jersey community college after graduating Summa Cum Laude and earning his Associate of Applied Science in Information Assurance and Cybersecurity. His passion for computing and Cybersecurity drove him to attend Florida International University to finish his undergraduate degree in Information Technology. While at community college, Dalton participated in a year-long comprehensive research project under the supervision of Lockheed Martin to integrate two technologies for sensitive network systems, including: Blockchain technology and solutions concerning the automated detection of anomalous network activity. Furthermore, Dalton is part of Upsilon Pi Epsilon at FIU, the National Society of Leadership and Success, and the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. After graduation, Dalton plans to continue his studies by earning a Masters in Cybersecurity.
Joshuan Jimenez
B.S. in CS Graduate
Joshuan is an undergraduate student who pursued a BS in Computer Science. Eventually, he plans to also pursue his MS in CS. He came to FIU in Summer 2019 and has been involved heavily in his studies and with various programs, such as MentorFIU, SparkDev, and the CMB Enrichment Program. Interests of his include AI, Natural Language Processing, Software Development, and Cybersecurity. He was a CAESCIR fellow from Spring 2020 to Summer 2022, when he earned his BS degree.
Alexander Monaco
B.S. in IT Student
Alexander is an Information Technology - Software Track BS Student. He has been working as a Learning Assistant, helping SCIS professors as a near-peer mentor in active learning courses they teach; he has also been volunteering as a student teacher for after school programs run to benefit local elementary school students via the Google igniteCS program. He began working with CAESCIR Co-PI Alexander Afanasyev in the Fall 2018 semester and graduated with his BS in IT that semester. He is now pursuing his MS degree at FIU.
